- This program is designed for crossword puzzle doers and dabblers. -
- It can be used to solve diagramless puzzles or to construct your -
- own crossword puzzles. It lets you build a puzzle of size up to -
- 30 by 30. Each square can be made dark or can contain a letter; -
- non-dark squares can have a number in the upper left corner. -
- When you have established the pattern for a section (which squares -
- are dark and which are not), the program can number the squares -
- in the section for you. If you don't like where a given block of -
- squares is within the puzzle, you can select that block and slide -
- it somewhere else.
-
- If you like this program I would appreciate receiving a nominal -
- donation ($20), or a post card if you are too poor to send money. -
- Please send to:

- Then I can send you a version without this advertisement.

- NOTE: Crozzle is free to employees of the Princeton Plasma
- Physics Laboratory.
-
- KEYSTROKES:
-
- To position the insert point, blink the mouse once in the square. -
- The direction the insert point will move after you type any of the -
- keys listed below is indicated by the arrow at the top of the scroll -
- bar: if it points to the right, the insert point will move across; -
- if it points down, the point will move down.
-
- To fill a square and/or move the insert point:
-
- A-Z puts that letter in the square
- a-z converts to upper case and does the same as A-Z
- / turns the square dark
- <sp> blanks the square
- . skips to next non-dark square
- <tab> skips to next clear (blank) square
- <backspace> backs up to the last non-dark square
- <arrow key) moves the point in the direction of the
- arrow irrespective of the default direction
-
- As it moves, the insert point skips over any dark squares; -
- if it reaches the right end it goes to the next line; if it reaches -
- the bottom, it disappears (you must set it again with the mouse).
-
- To set the number for a square:
- 0-9 starts or continues a number
- \ clears the number
- + or = sets the number to one higher than the last
- (looking backward through the puzzle) number
-
- When you enter a number, the insert point stays in the same square.
-
-
- MOVES:
-
- To move a block of squares, drag the mouse to select the area to be -
- shifted. Then drag the mouse from inside that area to the destination. -
- If any part of the area moves past the right or left edge, -
- that piece wraps around to the other side.
-
- FILE:
-
- New lets you create a new (clean) outline with the dimensions -
- you select up to 30 by 30.
-
- Open lets you read the contents of a previously saved puzzle.
-
- Save lets you save the contents of the puzzle you are working on.
-
- Resize lets you change the dimensions of the puzzle you are working -
- on; any filled squares are left unchanged.
-
- Quit terminates the program.
-
-
- DIRECTION:
-
- Down (or command-D) sets the direction the cursor will move after you -
- type a letter or / to down.
-
- Across (or command-A) sets the cursor move direction to across.
-
-
- BLOCKS:
-
- Black sets the entire selected rectangle (defined by dragging -
- the mouse) to dark. Command-B or slash with an area selected -
- does the same.
-
- White blanks the entire selected area, erasing any numbers -
- and/or letters. Command-W or space does the same.
-
- Reflect takes the selected area and duplicates its outline (which -
- squares are dark and which are clear) diagonally across the -
- midpoint of the puzzle. Any squares which previously contained -
- numbers and/or letters are left unchanged.
-
- Number fills in numbers for all squares that start a word (either down -
- or across) in the block, starting with a number one higher than the -
- last number before the start of the block.
-
-
- FINISHED FLAG
-
- Whenever the puzzle you are working on is completely filled in, -
- a "finished" flag appears in the lower right corner of the window -
- (where the resize icon is for normal windows).
